The word "raisin" comes from the Latin word “racemes” which means a cluster of grapes or berries.
Rasinis(Round)
Raisins are dried sweet grapes. While the colors of raisins vary, they are generally a deep brown color. Having about 78 per cent fructose, raisins are a convenient, high energy low fat snack. They are high in calories and are suggested by dietitians for gaining weight. They are known to be an effective cure for anemia, constipation, and acidosis. Like other dried fruits, raisins are available throughout the year. Raisins also help to fight dental problems such as cavities, gum diseases etc., as they contain oleanolic acid that helps kill the bacteria present in the plaque.
Varieties :
Gol Kishmish: Gol kishmish or round raisins are a variety of raisins from Afganistan. These are relatively cheaper than long raisins, but taste just as good.
Dark Raisins: These are the most common variety found in markets. Although they start as green grapes, the fruit naturally darkens as it dries.
Seeded (Black Raisin): Seeded raisins are made from grapes that normally have seeds. They are very different in flavor from the seedless variety.
Seedless (Black Raisin): Seedless raisins are made from grapes with no seeds. They are commonly available all through the year.
Tip: Approximately 40 grams of raisins contain 310 milligrams of potassium, which helps lowering the risk of hypertension.
Until medieval times, raisins were the second in choice as a sweetener, honey being the top choice. At one time in ancient Rome, raisins were considered so valuable that two jars could buy a slave. In the 13th century, Damascus had quite a reputation for their sweet raisins.
